Tyler Grey Pattillo

We are so happy to announce that Tyler Grey Pattillo was born at 4:35am on May 28th. He weighed 6 lb. 5 oz. and was 21 1/4 in. long. He is the most precious baby that we have ever seen. (Obviously, we are slightly biased!) Here is how it all went down...

Friday, May 25th was my last day at work. I had taken off the last week of school just in case Tyler decided to come early and I am so thankful that I did because he came exactly one week early! Saturday and Sunday I had been having contractions but by the evening (both days) they seemed to go away. I was always so worried that I wouldn't realize I was in labor until it was too late and Brian wasn't about to deliver a baby on the side of the road! Brian and I went to dinner at Chuy's and then went home to watch The Vow. I fell asleep during the movie so I was pretty sure it was NOT real labor. If you can sleep through the contraction then you probably aren't in actual labor. :) Brian and I went to bed around 10:30. Well....at 11:30 I was jolted awake by a large gush (sorry if that is TMI) and jumped up and ran to the bathroom while yelling "I think my water just broke." Brian jumped out of bed and began to run around all crazy like. It was kind of funny because I was the one trying to calm him down. We called my dad just to make sure I wasn't crazy and that we really did need to go to the hospital and he assured us that we did need to head to the hospital but it would probably take a while once we got there. My parents took their sleeping pills and went back to bed assuming they would head up to Dallas in the morning without missing anything.
We got to Baylor Hospital around 11:45pm and got all checked in. My contractions had increased in pain and were pretty much 2 minutes apart and lasting 1 minute once we got in the car and headed to the hospital. At that point I was 100% sure I was in labor because they hurt more than the ones I had over the weekend and were coming really close together. The nurse checked me and to both of our surprise I had already dilated to 6 cm. However, it had been drilled in my head that first time mom's typically labor between 15-18 hours. So even though I was already pretty far along as far as dilating goes we were prepared to be there for a while. At that point Brian's parents had gotten up to the hospital and helped distract me while the contractions came and went. The contractions were still not to an unbearable point so we held off on the epidural. Brian and I had both decided that we wanted to wait to get the epidural until the pain was just too much. I wanted to "feel" labor and work through it as long as I could. Somewhere around 2am they were extremely painful and so close together that I wasn't really getting any breaks in between. At that point, I asked for the epidural. I was really worried that it was going to be really painful to get the epidural but it actually didn't hurt at all and once it kicked in....HEAVEN!!!!! I couldn't feel a thing :). My body agreed because within 10 minutes I had dilated to 9 cm and started pushing at 3:50am. Since it was a holiday weekend my doctor was out of town so the doctor on call delivered Tyler. She was AMAZING and really encouraging as she helped me push. Brian was great the whole time and did a great job encouraging me and offering to do anything I needed :). Once I started pushing Brian's parents went to the waiting room and after 11 contractions (30 minutes) Tyler was born!
During my contractions, Tyler's heart rate had been going up and down so the doctor was anticipating the cord being around his neck. When he came out Tyler was a bluish grey color and the cord had been wrapped around his neck twice. I never saw him with the cord on his neck but Brian did and it scared him pretty bad. Thankfully the doctor had anticipated this happening and quickly unwrapped it and Tyler quickly regained normal color. He was absolutely perfect and I will never forget that moment when they put him on my chest.
The funny part of this whole thing was that everyone in my family was out of town for the weekend. Grant was in Arkansas for a wedding, my parents live in Temple so they were there, and Kali and Lance were at Lance's parents lake house in Tyler. Grant was the only one that was responding to my texts during labor. My parents had gone back to bed since they anticipating it taking so long and my sister didn't have her phone in the room so she never even saw the texts. My dad woke up at 5am and thought about checking his phone thinking I would still be chilling at the hospital and barely be dilated. He was wrong...he looked at his phone and saw a picture of Tyler and ran in the room to tell my mom that he was already here. My mom of course jumped out of bed and began running in circles. They quickly loaded up the car and headed up to Dallas. I had also been texting my sister all night but had heard nothing. She had put her phone in the kitchen and heard it going off but thought it was her mother-in-laws phone. I called her around 6:30 and Lance answered the phone. The first thing I said was "So I had a baby last night." and Lance was completely caught off guard. They too quickly loaded up and headed to Dallas. Here are some of our favorite pictures.

Class Shower

I have an amazing homeroom mom that hosted a shower for me and my class today. She (along with some other awesome parents) decorated the room and put together a cute basket of baby goodies from the kids. My students were so proud of all of their little contributions and felt so grown up being at a baby shower! Here are some pictures of my room.

My kids also made the cutest book with lots of advice for me as a new mommy. It was hilarious to look through and read all of their advice.

"Don't forget to feed the baby when you are a mommy."

"Don't forget to change the baby's diaper when you are a mommy."

Thanks to my amazing room mom who put this whole thing together. I felt very special :).

35 Week Update

I can't believe that I am approaching my last month of pregnancy. I had an appointment with my doctor on Monday and the best part was that we got to see Tyler's sweet little face.
The sonographer said everything is looking great and that he is head down and ready to go! She actually made a comment that he was really low and she didn't think if I would make it all the way to 40 weeks...we'll see about that. I'm not getting my hopes up. At this point she is estimating his birth weight to be between 7 and 8 pounds. My doctor said that I am dilated to 1 cm at this point and I have gained a total of 30 pounds. Yikes!
Tuesday some of my sweet co-workers through a baby shower for me at school. It was "cowboy" themed and everyone was given a different time of day (play time, feeding time, sleepy time, etc). I got lots of great stuff. Tanner came along and was a great helper with unwrapping all the gifts. He still is a little confused on who all the stuff is for. He kept saying "Tanner's" and I had to remind him that it is "Tyler's".

"YAY!!!"
Another highlight of the week was our field trip to the zoo. We took 4 classes and 35 chaperones with us. I had my brother on standby just in case I happened to go into labor. I think he was a little disappointed that he wasn't needed after all. :) Especially after we all remembered how "prepared" he was when my sister was in labor with Tanner.
Yes, that is Grant with a mask and gloves in the delivery room....scary! (Sorry the pic is so blurry.) Here is a picture of me at the zoo. Only 4 1/2 more weeks till we meet our little guy. I can't wait!
